IS THERE LAW AND JUSTICE IN DENMARK?

SOME GOOD ADVICE TO DANES LIVING ABROAD

.............. BEWARE... THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU! ...............

5. Another reason you should not be tempted to stay with family when visiting Denmark is, that YOUR FAMILY WILL BE USED BY THE PROSECUTION TO GET YOU CONVICTED. By the help of what I believe to be a Danish invention known as "Centre for Life Interests" and which is based on some partly abstract criteria, the prosecuting authority believe themselves to be able, on behalf of the accused, to determine where his life interests are placed. Having family in Denmark is thus one of the most poisonous arrows in the prosecutor's quiver. Furthermore, I have learned, that if you stay with family during your visits to Denmark, this will by the Danish Authorities be interpreted to mean that you have accommodation available for use in Denmark, and that being the case you are then considered to be resident and consequently liable to pay Danish taxes on the whole of your income. None of this was told me when in 1974 I made enquiries with the Danish Taxation Authorities, so why wasn’t I told? ... The answer to that question must be obvious to everybody, because I am certain the Danish Taxation Authorities did not expect me to book into a hotel when I visited my wife.

6. PURCHASE ONLY WHAT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY DURING YOUR VISIT TO DENMARK. When taking Denmark’s sick balance of trade into consideration, and the fact that purchases made by Danes living abroad surely would represent a significant income of foreign currency, the above statement must to most people sound idiotic. Nevertheless, in connection with the aforementioned concept regarding "Centre for life interests". In my case the prosecutor told the court that I was a regular customer at an optometrist in Odense. I had bought only one pair of spectacles from the said optometrist, and that was in January 1984. Previous to that, and in spite of already then having worn glasses for 25 years, I had never purchased anything from Danish optometrists, or opticians. The prosecutor also claimed that my regular dentist was in Denmark. I have naturally looked after my teeth normally, i.e. having them checked once every six months. Major works on my teeth such as operations and fillings I have had done in the following countries: Mexico, Panama, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

7.
PURCHASE YOUR TRAVEL TICKET BOTH TO AND FROM DENMARK BEFORE ENTERING THE COUNTRY, otherwise the prosecutor will claim that your starting point is Denmark. Furthermore, the court will be told that your regular travel agent is in Denmark. Having been in a job, where the business situation can change from day to day and require quick decisions including last minute alterations to plans and itinerary, I was travelling on an "IATA AIR TRAVEL CARD" with which I have purchased air tickets in a great number of countries, amongst them on a few occasions also in Denmark, this made the prosecutor make the above mentioned claim that Denmark was my starting point, and that I had a regular travel agent in Odense.
The fact is, that more often than not, I simply telephoned the air line with which I would be departing, quoted my card number and asked them to have my ticket ready for me when checking in.
